⁹ Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress;^(A)

    I am the utter contempt^(J) of my neighbors^(K)
and an object of dread to my closest friends—
    those who see me on the street flee from me.

    I have become like broken pottery.

    “Terror on every side!”^(N)
They conspire against me^(O)
    and plot to take my life.^(P)

¹⁴ But I trust^(Q) in you, Lord;
    I say, “You are my God.”
¹⁵ My times^(R) are in your hands;
    deliver me from the hands of my enemies,
    from those who pursue me.
¹⁶ Let your face shine^(S) on your servant;
    save me in your unfailing love.^(T)

⁵⁵ I called on your name, Lord,
    from the depths^(A) of the pit.^(B)
56 You heard my plea:^(C) “Do not close your ears
    to my cry for relief.”
⁵⁷ You came near^(D) when I called you,
    and you said, “Do not fear.”^(E)

⁵⁸ You, Lord, took up my case;^(F)
    you redeemed my life.^(G)
59 Lord, you have seen the wrong done to me.^(H)
    Uphold my cause!^(I)
60 You have seen the depth of their vengeance,
    all their plots against me.^(J)

⁶¹ Lord, you have heard their insults,^(K)
    all their plots against me—
⁶² what my enemies whisper and mutter
    against me all day long.^(L)
63 Look at them! Sitting or standing,
    they mock me in their songs.^(M)

⁶⁴ Pay them back what they deserve, Lord,
    for what their hands have done.^(N)
65 Put a veil over their hearts,^(O)
    and may your curse be on them!
⁶⁶ Pursue^(P) them in anger and destroy them
    from under the heavens of the Lord.
